Samsung assures us this is something that will be fixed before the handset launches in a few weeks and consequently I won't upload image samples until then. The camera is quick to open and focus, but it is far too easy to introduce blur into a shot with the slightest of movement. The camera on the Galaxy S4 justifiably received a lot of praise and in upping it from 13 to 16 megapixels Samsung is clearly looking to press home the message it has improved again.īased on my time with the S5 that isn’t immediately obvious. The target clearly is very young children, but in combination with its waterproofing this could be the first luxury smartphone you feel safe leaving with your kids.Ĭamera – More megapixels, but still no OIS Enabled it locks the phone in a colourful mode with simplified camera controls and media access and lets parents specify which apps and functions can be accessed.

One feature I do like though is ‘Kids mode’. The Galaxy S5 does offer expandable microSD storage (like the Xperia Z2 and HTC One M8), but it would be nice to have the option to remove a lot of the Samsung bloatware from native memory.

The S5 consumes around 6GB of space compared to the 2GB used by stock Android on the Nexus 5. On the upside it is now easy to get the look of stock Android using the Google Experience Launcher (here is my guide to do this).Īnother grating flaw with TouchWiz is its storage consumption. I’ve never been a fan of its graphical style and the rough and ready icons haven’t been greatly improved with the S5. What isn’t so impressive is TouchWiz, Samsung’s excessive reskin of Android.

Software – TouchWiz is still ugly and bloated Again this can be hit and miss with the reader initially giving me a resting heart rate of 111 (!), but it ties in nicely with Samsung’s updated Health 3.0 app which also tracks your steps and location, counts calories and sets fitness goals. Hold your finger gently to it and after 5-10 seconds you’ll get a pulse reading. In addition to this the S5 has a heart rate monitor just under the rear camera. This is less accurate and did occasionally require a couple of swipes to register, but Samsung compensates by tying in a biometrics-based digital wallet with PayPal support that has the potential to be a big success. Instead you must swipe your finger over the reader – a much older technology. Like the iPhone 5S the fingerprint reader lets you lock and unlock your phone, but unlike the 5S it doesn’t read your print simply by placing a finger on its home button. While the Galaxy line is infamous for bloatware and somewhat gimmicky features such as eye-tracking and needless services like S Voice, the S5 brings the more tangible benefits of a fingerprint scanner and heart rate monitor. The potentially sporty implications for a water resistant camera are also coupled by some significant biometrics. This won’t mean you take the S5 swimming, but it does mean you don’t need to be shy using it in the rain or grabbing it to answer a call in the shower and you can take the occasional photo underwater. Users will need to shut a flap which covers the power port (the flap feels flimsy in hand) but then the S5 will survive for up to 20 minutes in a metre of water.

HTC boasts the One M8 can last 30 hours with 10% battery remaining using a similar option and Samsung says you’ll get close to that with 24 hours from 10% in Ultra Power Saving Mode on the S5.Īnother practical gem with the S5 is its water resistance. The holy grail for most users.Īn enlarged 2800mAh battery (up from 2600mAh in the S4) aids this, but is dwarfed by the 3200mAh capacity of the Xperia Z2 so Samsung combines it with what it is dubbing an ‘Ultra Power Saving Mode’.

I’ll need the handset for longer to judge this thoroughly but having used it intensively for a few hours, the modest reduction in charge suggests it should last a full day even with heavy use. Samsung claims the S5 can deliver 11 hours of video playback, 10 hours of web browsing over LTE, 21 hours of talk time or 390 hours of standby. In fairness the S4 was no slouch so the real appeal in the S5 is the 801’s power sipping ways. The UI never stutters, apps open almost instantaneously and there has yet to be a game released on the Play Store which can make it break sweat.

It shares this combination with the HTC One M8 and Sony Xperia Z2 and results in an entirely lag free user experience. In terms of speed the S5 gets a bump to Qualcomm’s top of the line Snapdragon 801 chipset and Adreno 330 graphics. So what made the S5 bigger and heavier than its predecessor? Speed, stamina and a boat load of new features. New Features – Greater Speed, Battery Life and Water resistance
